Event Description:
The Sapling Team participated in a volunteering event with FoodShare this month.
FoodShare is a food justice organization, advocating for the right to food, and working to challenge the systemic barriers that keep people from accessing the food they need to thrive. They support community-led food initiatives and work alongside communities most affected by poverty and food insecurity: Black and Indigenous people, people of colour, people with disabilities, and folks living on a low income.
Our team learned about urban and school gardening by volunteering at Burnhamthorpe CI Gardens, a School Grown program where FoodShare has turned an underutilized school yard into a vibrant and productive three-acre urban farm. This program offers paid jobs and school credit opportunities to students farming at the school.
Our team has helped with harvesting a whole range of seasonal squashes. It was hard work, but our team pulled through with filling the stocking room with shelves filled with colourful squashes. The produce is sold at a Farmer’s market nearby. It is a privilege to support our communities by contributing our time and resources with an organization like FoodShare!
