CLIENT: Heavy Civil and Specialty Construction Contractor

A heavy civil construction contractor running operations across several entities asked Sapling to build a management model that delivers private equity-level, best-in-class budgeting and scenario planning. The goal was a 3-statement model and dashboard that builds up from the project pipeline, so the team could run scenarios and see the P&L, balance sheet, and cash flow at the project, portfolio, and consolidated levels.

Key Insights

We modeled cost incurrence at the project level, mapping each pipeline project to a curve that controls when revenue and cost flow into the financials. This also allowed the client to see cash flow generation at the project level.

We consolidated project and entity-level financials into a full 3-statement model with tax, lease, depreciation, and debt schedules, giving management a holistic view of operations.

We created an interactive dashboard where management can add new projects to the pipeline, change assumptions on timing, cost, and contract type, and see the impact on the P&L, balance sheet, and cash.
